Dining Table Repair Before Thanksgiving in Modesto

Dining table and chairs in the Nixon's Oak Tree House workshop

The table has carried ordinary dinners without a second thought. Now you're hosting Thanksgiving, the leaves have come out, and you can see the worn top and the chair that shifts when someone sits down. The decision isn't whether a fresh-looking table would be nice. It's which work actually matters before people arrive.

Start with the chair. If a joint moves, don't ask a guest to test it. A table with an old finish can still host dinner; an unstable seat is a different matter. Likewise, an extension leaf that won't sit level is a functional problem, not just a blemish.

Separate the unsafe from the merely tired

Look at the whole set. Does the table rock? Are the leaf supports sound? Do the chairs flex at the legs or back? Those are questions for furniture repair. A cloudy top, worn edges or faded color is a different conversation about furniture refinishing. The work may be separate, and it may not all belong on the same schedule.

Send a photo of the table and chairs through our contact form now. Include the leaf fitted and a close view of any loose joint. Bob, Jenny and Dick can help you decide which issue deserves attention first, without asking you to guess from a description.

Ask what can realistically be done

A full refinish involves preparation and curing; a loose joint calls for a different kind of work. Neither should be rushed to meet a meal. Tell us when you need the furniture in your home, and we'll discuss what the shop can actually take on. If the sensible plan is to repair a chair and leave the table's surface for later, we'll say so.

Sometimes the marks are part of a serviceable table, and doing nothing to the top is the right answer. Sometimes the surface is failing and deserves a closer look. A photo in daylight, including the whole piece and the worn areas, gives us a place to start.

If you're in Modesto, Turlock, Ceres or nearby, send photos of your dining set and tell us about your gathering. We'll give you an honest answer about the work and whether the timing makes sense.
