The house is sold, and the piano is the one thing nobody wants to touch
Most Manteca calls start the same way. The boxes are mostly done, the closing date is set, and the piano is sitting in the front room or the loft because nobody is sure how it gets down the stairs without taking the banister or a person with it. Some of these pianos came with a family from the Bay Area and have already made one long move. Some are going to a daughter's house across town.
It is a fair worry. A piano is not heavy furniture that a couple of strong friends can manage. It is a dense, top-heavy instrument with its weight in a cast-iron plate, and the dangerous moment is almost always a turn on the stairs. We plan for that turn before we arrive.
Our own truck, our own crew, our own shop in Modesto.
Manteca is mostly newer houses, and that changes the problem
Manteca grew fast, and a large share of the town is tract housing from the last few decades: wide driveways, attached garages, a clean approach to the front door. On the outside, it is easier than almost anywhere we work.
Inside is another story. Two-story floor plans are the norm, and plenty of families put the piano in a loft or an upstairs bonus room. Those staircases are often a straight run that ends in a tight turn at the top, or a box stair with a landing halfway. The width at the landing and the ceiling height above it decide how an upright gets turned and whether a grand can go up on its side at all.
The older streets near downtown and off Yosemite Avenue are different again: single-story homes, front steps, narrower original doorways. Fewer stairs, more careful threshold work. Tell us which kind of house you have and we will know what to bring.
The quickest way to a firm price for a Manteca move: send a photo of the piano and one of the stairs or the path to the front door. The contact form and the chat both take photos straight from your phone.
Grands come apart. Uprights get planned around the turn
A grand piano is moved on its side on a padded skid board, with the legs, lyre and pedals taken off first. That is normal and it is how the instrument is meant to travel. It is also why a grand needs a crew who has done it many times, not a general mover with a furniture dolly.
An upright stays in one piece, which is why the staircase matters so much. We measure the narrowest point, the landing depth and the headroom, pad the walls and the rail, and decide where the pivots happen before the piano leaves the floor.
A planned run up 99, and storage when the dates do not line up
Manteca is north of us, past Salida and Ripon. It is not a long drive, but it is far enough that we treat it as a planned trip rather than a drop-in. We settle the load, the access at both ends and the arrival window on the phone, so the day itself is one trip and not two.
If you are selling in Manteca and buying somewhere else, the closing dates rarely match. We can wrap the piano and keep it on raised supports at our Modesto shop, then bring it to the new house with the same crew when you have the keys.
After the move, give it time before you tune
Any piano that moves will drift a little as it settles into a new room. The usual advice is to let it sit for a few weeks in its new spot before booking a tuning, so the tuning holds. Where it sits matters too. Avoid a spot beside a heating vent or in front of a wall of west-facing glass.
What it costs to come out to Manteca, straight
A Manteca move is priced as a whole job. What decides it is the instrument, the distance, and above all the stairs and turns at each end, which is why we never quote it as a flat rate.
A piano does not come to the shop for a look, so for a move we price from the details: the piano type, both addresses, the stairs and the access. A photo of the piano and one of the path out of the house usually covers it, and the price is firm before anything is scheduled.
If the access is unusual enough that Bob needs to see it in person, there is a charge for that visit. We tell you what it is when you call, before anybody drives anywhere.

Manteca questions
- Can you move a piano up to a loft in a two-story Manteca house?
- Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do there. The landing and the turn at the top decide the method, so tell us the narrowest width and whether the stair turns.
- Do you move grand pianos in Manteca?
- Yes. A grand is moved on its side on a padded skid board with the legs and pedals removed, then reassembled in place.
- How much does it cost to move a piano in Manteca?
- It depends on the piano, both addresses, the stairs and the access. Tell us those, or send photos, and we will give you a firm price. Call (209) 524-6349.
- Can you store the piano until our new house closes?
- Yes. We wrap pianos and store them on raised supports at our Modesto shop, then deliver with the same crew.
- Do you also serve Lathrop and Ripon?
- Yes. Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon are all on our northern route.
