Is it worth the drive to Modesto?
That is the real question for most Merced customers, and it is a fair one. Our bench is in Modesto, a good way up Highway 99. For a piece that is genuinely worth restoring, the drive is a small part of the job. For a piece that is not, we would rather tell you before you load it in the car.
So we start with photos. Two or three pictures of the piece and the damage usually tell us whether it is a job for us, what it would involve, and whether it is worth your while to bring it up.

What comes up from Merced
Merced is an older valley town with a newer university side, and the furniture reflects both. From the older homes around downtown we see family pieces that have been in the same house for generations: oak dressers, dining tables, chairs that have been re-glued more than once, and case pieces with veneer starting to lift.
From the newer side of town it is more often pieces that have moved with a family, or estate pieces kept from a parent's house. Inherited furniture tends to arrive with years of storage on it, and the valley heat in a garage or outbuilding is hard on glue joints and old finishes.
Send a wide photo of the piece and a close-up of the worst spot through the contact form or the chat. We will tell you straight whether it is worth the trip.
Heat, dry air and old joints
Long hot summers dry old glue and open up joints. Chairs go wobbly, drawers stick or rattle, and finishes check and craze. None of that means the piece is finished. Loose joints are taken apart, cleaned and re-glued properly, not just shot with fresh glue on top of the old.
Lifted veneer can usually be laid back down. Crazed finish is often in the finish film rather than the wood. What matters is catching it before a split goes through the wood itself.
Making the drive count
If you are bringing one piece up, it is worth asking whether anything else in the house needs attention, so one trip covers it. For larger pieces or a full set, we run our own truck, and pickup can be talked through when you call.
What it costs to come out to Merced, straight
