The drive from Modesto to Stockton
Stockton is roughly thirty miles north of us, straight up Highway 99 through Salida, Ripon and Manteca, or over to I-5 when the destination is on the west side of town. It is a planned trip rather than a drop-in, so we schedule Stockton jobs with the traffic in mind and confirm access at both ends before the truck leaves the yard.
That planning is the whole point of hiring people who do this. A long move with one wrong assumption about a stairwell turns into two trips. We would rather ask five questions on the phone than improvise in your entry hall.
Stockton's older housing stock is its own challenge
Stockton has real architecture — Craftsman bungalows, Tudors and older two-stories around the Miracle Mile, Victory Park and the neighborhoods off Pacific Avenue, plus grand older homes with formal front rooms that were built when a piano was expected furniture.
Those houses come with raised foundations, front steps, deep porches, original doorways, and stair runs that turn at a landing. They also come with floors and woodwork nobody wants marked. We measure the path, pad and protect it, and decide the pivot points before lifting.
Out toward Brookside, Lincoln Village and the newer north-side developments, the geometry is friendlier but the piano is usually going to an upstairs bonus room or coming down from one. Different problem, same preparation.
Delta humidity and where the piano should sit
Stockton sits at the edge of the Delta, and the air behaves differently there than it does in Modesto. Wood responds to swings in humidity — that is true of the case, the soundboard, and the joints of any old instrument.
When we place a piano we will tell you what we would avoid: a wall of west-facing glass, a spot directly over or beside a heating vent, and exterior walls in a room that swings hot and cold. It costs nothing to put the piano in the right place on day one, and it is not our job to be quiet about it.
Moves, storage, and restoration in one shop
We move uprights, consoles, spinets, baby grands and grands, with proper dollies, a skid board for grands, straps and padding, and an experienced two-person crew. If the timing between two houses does not line up, the piano is wrapped and stored on raised supports at our Modesto shop until you are ready.
And because we are a restoration shop first, a Stockton piano that needs cabinet work does not need a second company: stripping, veneer repair, hand refinishing, cleaning and detailing all happen at our bench. See the piano services page for the full picture, and the Before & Afters page for the results.
Getting a price for a Stockton job
Tell us the piano type, both addresses, the stairs and the access, and we will give you a firm price. A Modesto-to-Stockton or in-Stockton move is priced on the actual distance, the piano, the stairs and the access, and you hear the number before we schedule anything.
