It has been in the barn for years. Is it too far gone?
That is the question we hear from Oakdale more than anywhere else. A dresser, a table or a cabinet went out to the barn or the shop when the house was redone, and now somebody wants it back. It is dusty, sun-faded, maybe split, and you cannot tell whether it is worth saving.
More often than people expect, it is. Old solid wood is forgiving. What we need to know is what it is made of, how it was built, and what has actually failed.

What sun, dust and a barn do to furniture
Oakdale furniture often comes out of outbuildings and unconditioned rooms, and the dry valley heat leaves its marks: tops faded and crazed where the sun hit them, joints loosened as old glue dried out, veneer lifting at the edges, and hardware rusted or missing. Rodent and insect damage turns up too.
Most of that is cosmetic or structural repair rather than a death sentence. Faded finish comes off. Joints come apart and get re-glued. Lifted veneer is laid back down, and missing pieces can be made to match.
Pull it into the light and take two photos, the whole piece and the worst damage. Send them through the contact form or chat and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth saving.
Ranch furniture and family pieces
The pieces that come out of Oakdale tend to be practical furniture that worked hard: kitchen tables, washstands, dressers, trunks, rockers. Plenty of them were built well and simply, which makes them good candidates for restoration.
If you want it to look like it did new, we can do that. If you want it cleaned up and sound but still looking like the piece you grew up with, that is a legitimate choice too, and often the right one for a family piece.
Getting it to the shop
Oakdale is a regular run east of Modesto, so bringing a piece in is easy for most people, and that is how the estimate is free. For something large or fragile, we run our own truck. Mention it when you call.
What it costs to come out to Oakdale, straight
A barn-find dresser and a sun-faded table top are different jobs, so we price each piece once we have seen it.
Bring it to the shop at 301 Maze Blvd and the estimate is free. If you need Bob to come out to Oakdale or a property beyond town to look at it, there is a charge for the visit, quoted when you call. Photos often answer the question first.

Oakdale questions
- Is furniture that has been in a barn for years worth restoring?
- Often, yes, if it is solid wood and the structure is sound. Send photos and we will tell you honestly.
- Can you fix a sun-faded table top?
- Yes. We strip the damaged finish, address the wood underneath and build a new finish by hand.
- Can you keep the old character instead of making it look new?
- Yes. We can repair and clean up a piece while keeping its patina, if that is what you want.
- Is the estimate free?
- It is free when you bring the piece to the shop at 301 Maze Blvd. An on-site visit has a charge, quoted when you call.
