Further out, so it has to go right the first time
Merced is further down Highway 99 than any of our other regular towns, and that is the first thing to be honest about. A Merced move is a full planned trip for the truck and the crew, not something we fit between two Modesto jobs.
That is exactly why it helps to call us rather than a general mover. A long drive is only a problem when the crew shows up and finds a staircase nobody mentioned. We ask the questions up front so the day goes as planned.
Our own truck, our own crew, our own shop in Modesto.
Two kinds of Merced move
The first is the family piano in an older Merced home. The neighborhoods around downtown and the older parts of town have raised foundations, front steps and porch approaches, and doorways that were built narrower than anything since. Those are threshold and step problems more than staircase problems, and they are about padding and patience.
The second has grown with the university. Pianos go in and out of rentals and newer housing on the north side of town as students, faculty and families arrive and leave. That means apartment stairwells, second-floor units, tight landings and building rules about when a move can happen. Tell us if there is a property manager involved so we can plan around it.
Because of the drive, photos matter more for Merced than anywhere else. Send one of the piano and one of the way out of the house through the contact form or the chat, and we can usually price it without a visit.
Stairs, turns and the narrowest point
On any piano move, the narrowest point on the path decides the method. For an upright that is usually a turn at a landing. For a grand it is the doorway and the angle the instrument has to take on its side on a skid board, with the legs and pedals removed.
Measure the tightest doorway, the landing and the headroom if you can. If you cannot, a photo of each is just as good.
When the timing does not match
Merced moves often involve a lease ending on one date and the next place opening on another. We can bring the piano back to our Modesto shop, wrap it, and store it on raised supports until you are ready, then deliver it with the same crew.
Atwater and Livingston usually fit on the same route, so a move between them and Merced is planned the same way.
Tuning after a move
A piano needs time to settle into a new room before a tuning holds. Give it a few weeks, keep it away from heating vents and sunny glass, then book the tuning.
What it costs to come out to Merced, straight
The drive is part of the job, so it is part of the price, along with the instrument, the stairs and the access at both ends. We do not quote a flat rate, because a Merced campus apartment and a downtown home on a raised foundation are different jobs.
A piano does not come to the shop for a look, so for a move we price from the details: the piano type, both addresses, the stairs and the access. A photo of the piano and one of the path out of the house usually covers it, and the price is firm before anything is scheduled.
If the job genuinely needs Bob to see it in person first, there is a charge for driving down to Merced, and we tell you what it is when you call. Most of the time, good photos make that trip unnecessary.
